The functional study included a retrospective data analysis of 384 surgically treated tongue carcinoma patients and a clinical survey of postoperative tongue function in 55 patients comparing flap reconstruction and primary closure. For the first time, the significantly more frequent use of flap reconstruction in women was shown, as well as no advantage of tongue function by flap reconstruction in T1/2 carcinomas. For oncologic outcome, 50 HNSCC blood samples were analyzed by ELISA for the presence of MMP-2,-9, TIMP-1,-2, and CXCL12. Significantly higher plasma concentrations could be detected for TIMP-1 in distant metastasis, thus TIMP-1 may represent a new prognostic fluid marker.
