Atopic eczema (AE) is a globally spread inflammatory skin disease. In AE, characteristically elevated skin pH and microbial dysbiosis due to high S. aureus loads are linked to disease severity.
Under extrinsic pH modulation skin physiology, skin microbiome and clinical symptoms were analysed over 8 weeks. In contrast to high stability in healthy skin, AE showed a significant increase in S. aureus, independent of applied emollient pH. S. aureus might even be predictive for AE disease progression.
