In this thesis, a newly developed BOLD-based MRI method for the semi-quantitative measurement of the venous oxygen saturation in the brain was applied to patients with acute stroke. The objective was to test prospectively, in comparison with the established combination of perfusion and diffusion weighted measurements, if this method is suitable for characterizing the penumbra and for predicting infarct growth. The results suggest that the investigated measurement method could provide valuable, additional information for the assessment of the tissue at risk of infarction.
