This dissertation investigates entrepreneurs’ motivation, the influence of their beliefs in the opportunity and team, and the moderating role of uncertainties stemming from the venture, team, and individual. It addresses important gaps in prior research concerning team’s relevance next to the opportunity, opportunity’s relevance post venture foundation, and when and which type of uncertainty inhibits or promotes entrepreneurs’ motivation. Empirical results show a complex pattern. Contingent on the specific belief-uncertainty pairing, uncertainty can inhibit or promote entrepreneurs’ motivation. Implications for research are discussed.
