Important achievements of this thesis are the design and setup of a novel attosecond science facility that allows photoelectron streaking spectroscopy on gaseous, solid and – for the first time – also on liquid samples. Moreover, the analysis of the measured photoemission delays between two different electronic states in gaseous and liquid water reveals photoionization and scattering dynamics with a few-attosecond precision. In an additional project, angular streaking spectroscopy is applied for the single-shot, temporal characterization of X-ray free-electron laser pulses.
