Abstract:

By using a new high frequent rTMS protocol, the biphasic quadro-pulse stimulation, it was possible to evaluate the influence of the current flow direction and the interstimulus interval on the induction of plasticity oft he human motor cortex. In this context it is important to mention the so-called I-waves. For the first time it was able to show that the I-wave-adapted stimulation (with an interstimulus interval of 1,5 ms) produces a bidirectional neuronal plasticity. This knowledge about the bidirectionality of the stimulation protocol QPS 1,5_200 is a fine step forward particularly for the specific application of the transcranial magnetic stimulation in clinics and research.
