The substitution of timber products for solid construction elements of concrete and steel is gaining popularity in the building sector. Utilizing CLT in important construction parts like shear walls requires a precise understanding of the in-plane behaviour of the elements under shear loads. Yet, established test methods show deficits in a theoretical and practical way.
The less established picture frame tests provide great theoretical potential but display shortcomings in execution. The introduction of a uniform shear flow to the edges of the specimen is strongly dependent on the chosen bonding method of frame and specimen. It also determines the time expenditure required to install and remove the specimen into the apparatus.
In this context, the untested bonding method of notches is analysed. According to the underlying thesis, notches as shear connectors can introduce shear in a sufficiently strong and constant way and enable economically efficient test executions at the same time.
The scope of this work is the provision of all theoretical preparatory work for the practical test executions, that can ultimately verify the thesis. This includes the development of optimized shape of the grooves based on the geometric boundary conditions predestined by an existing testing frame. Specific dimensions and a fastening procedure are developed and transferred into fabrication drawings.
Furthermore, the functionality is tested and confirmed using a physical model as well as numerical methods like finite-element analyses.
Finally, the suitability of the designed bonding system can only be proved by the practical preparation of frame and specimen, as well as the execution of test runs.
