This study investigated the influence of individual cortical oscillations (so called I-waves) on spike timing mechanisms of synaptic plasticity in human primary motor cortex (M1) using a newly established ultra high-frequent transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) protocol with paired pulses. We observed a strong correlation between individual latencies of these oscillations and synaptic plasticity. This indicates mechanisms of high-fidelity spike timing mechanisms in human M1 and underlines the necessity to individualize TMS for therapeutic purposes.
