In plants, most agrochemicals and pollutants are detoxified via conjugation with glutathione (GSH). The resulting GSH conjugates and their metabolites γGC- and Cys-X are transported through the plant root and are exudated into the surrounding soil. Transport of GSH conjugates is faster than transport of the other metabolites. In the root zone, the conjugates influence the rhizosphere organisms in many ways. After addition of the conjugates, soil fungi transiently induce different GST isoforms. The growth of several soil bacteria can be specifically enhanced or inhibited by application of a conjugate and a C containing substrate (i. e., root exudates). An altered rhizosphere flora, on the other hand, has an influence on the GST activities of plants. The presented thesis contributes to the understanding of interactions between plants and the rhizosphere.
