A potato growing system which prevents soil erosion has been investigated: The direct sowing in summer ridges. In order to test the usability in practice and to characterize the effects on the occurence of diseases, it was compared to conventional growing systems in field trials. The development of plant growth was delayed in the beginning of the cultivating period, and also was the decay of the canopy at the end of the growing period. Tendentially, higher yields were obtained, depending on the particular cover crop. In detached leaflet infection tests, there has been shown a higher resistance towards Phythophthora infestans. However, this higher resistance did not have any effect in the field trials due to high infection pressures.
