In a subgroup of patients with chronic urticaria autoantibodies have been discussed as pathogenetic factors. We investigated 89 patients with urticarial diseases and 35 healthy persons (control group) in a newly developed intracutaneus serum skin test. Thereby we used 4 different titrations of autologous serum. Chronic urticarial diseases, acute urticarial symptoms and the female sex were statistically significant parameters for a positive serum skin test. In further investigations we also examined these sera for anti-IgE- and/or anti-FceRIa-autoantibodies in Western blot studies. There is no significant correlation between the detection of anti-IgE- and/or anti-FceRIa-autoantibodies in the Western blot studies and a positive serum skin test. The occurrence of anti-FceRIa-autoantibodies is not specific for patients with urticaria, in fact, these autoantibodies were also detected in the control group of healthy persons in similar frequency.
