Knee joint and anterior cruciate ligament injuries are common in alpine skiing. A ski boot with integrated release mechanism developed for risk minimization was investigated in a field trial. Joint kinematics and muscle activity were analyzed in comparison with a conventional ski boot. Ankle and knee angles differed significantly. Certain subgroups varied in muscle activity. The modified ski boot may reduce the risk of injury in the studied situation. The release, however, should be individually adjustable, for example, to the body weight.
