The biocompatibility of vitreous substitute Siluron Xtra® was tested in vitro on porcine retina and retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) using a Minucell perfusion system. Morphologies of the tissues were examined in HE staining by light microscopy. Immunohistochemical markers GFAP (Glial fibrillary acidic protein) and Ki67 were used to determine muller cell damage in the retina and proliferation in the RPE. The results verified good structural biocompatibility of the silicone oil on porcine retina and RPE in vitro.
