The involvement of the lung in rheumatic diseases is a prognostic factor for morbidity and mortality. In this prospective study we examined 39 patients with rheumatic diseases for pulmonary arterial hypertension and interstitial lung disease as in a pulmonary fibrosis. Only non-invasive screening methods were applied. The primary endpoints of this study for pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary fibrosis were only detected in one patient. Although in the cohort as whole, a reduction of quality of life, right heart function and physical fitness were seen. Therefore, signs of lung function impairments and pulmonary diseases in patients with rheumatic diseases are serious accessory symptoms.
