The target of the clinical examination was to establish a cause and effect relationship between the gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and the occurrence of dental erosions (DE). Furthermore it should be established which risk factors have influence on the formation of DE. 71 patients suffering from GERD (patient collective) and 130 patients from a gastroenterologic Polyclinic (control collective) were clinically tested for the existence of DE. Beside the clinical examination, data on aetiological factors was collected within a questionnaire. The analysis of prevalence, localisation and severity of the DE of the patient collective showed no statistically significant deviation from the control collective. Instead, the rising age as well as the male sex could be determined, as a statistically significant difference.
