Cognitive decline is frequently observed in our ageing population, while the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms are not fully understood. Age related neurodegeneration and loss of neuronal function can be correlated with impaired mitochondrial integrity and reduced oxidative phosphorylation. Astrocytes, required for an intact brain physiology, outnumber neurons by many times. This mouse study examines the consequences of mitochondrial dysfunction in astrocytes in particular on adult neurogenesis.
