“Whitetopping” is a pavement technique of overlaying Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) pavements with portland cement concrete (PCC). This study results in a design guide for Thin Whitetopping (TWT). Laboratory and field testing are used to obtain inputs for the theoretical and numerical analysis of TWT. The results are used to establish the design method, taking into account among other aspects the bond between PCC and HMA, fatigue characteristics, thermal behavior and structural performance. Stresses in the pavement due to traffic loads and temperature differentials through the slab thickness are calculated. The number of admissible loads is calculated by analyzing the fatigue of the concrete and the asphalt. The results of the calculations are summarized in standardized design charts. In addition, standardized systems for Whitetopping are derived, which are easy to handle and therefore suitable for practical application.
