Urolithiasis has evolved into a common disease among which arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus and obesity are already ranked. The last three are also known as the “metabolic syndrome”.
A retrospective data analysis in a group of 472 patients suffering from urolithiasis was performed to examine whether hypertension, diabetes and obesity, the diseases of metabolic syndrome, soley or in combination increase the risk of urolithiasis. Out of 327 men and 145 women 154 were obese, 32 had arterial hypertension and in 18 diabetes mellitus was present. 28 patients had at least two symptoms of the metabolic syndrome.
Therefore, stone formation seems to be closely associated with the metabolic syndrome.
However, this analysis could not definitely clarify if urolithiasis is part of the syndrome or just a consequence of it.
