Due to the infinite number of possible traffic scenarios, the evaluation of the safety of autonomous vehicles is extremely time-consuming and complex. For this reason, research is currently being carried out on various methods that can be used to reduce the number of relevant test cases. One option is the objective characterisation of driving behaviour of the autonomous vehicle. If, for example, the automated driving function generally drives close to a vehicle in front and brakes late in the event of an inciting front vehicle, these characteristics can then be taken into account when creating critical scenarios. Consequently, this approach can be used to define critical scenarios specifically tailored to the vehicle under test. During the following safety assessment the focus can be put on these situations and therefore the number of necessary test cases can be reduced.
