A multiplex real-time PCR method for simultaneous detection and differentiation of food-associated thermophilic Campylobacter species
Campylobacter jejuni,
Campylobacter coli and
Campylobacter lari in poultry, meat, fish and mussels was established. Selectivity, sensitivity, efficiency, precision and robustness of the method were tested. For validation, 464 food samples were analysed for the presence of Campylobacter spp. in parallel with the multiplex real-time PCR and the conventional diagnostic method (cultural detection). Because of its sensitivity and rapidness, the multiplex real-time PCR might be a good alternative for routine analysis. It was shown to provide more reliable results regarding species identification compared to the conventional diagnostic method.
