The ubiquity of diesel engines in automobiles is a European phenomenon. In the USA, motorists are appalled by diesel cars because of their sluggishness, their dirty exhaust fumes and their unreliability. In Germany, diesel cars have a positive image. They are well renowned for their frugality, reliability and environmental friendliness. The theoretical concept of ‘rationality constructs’ can explain how this diametrically opposed perception emerged and stabilized. Moreover, it can give an explanation for the different dissemination of diesel cars in both countries.
