Take-all in winter wheat, caused by the fungus Gaeumannomyces graminis, is well known as a typical disease associated with certain crop rotations. This work, based on the results of a nationwide, multi-year survey, shows that the disease can be found throughout Germany, not limited to a distinct region. The severity of infection depends on site and husbandry. The strongest influences from husbandry are the preceding crop and sowing date. A risk assessment based on these factors provides the basis for controlling take-all with new, effective seed treatments. The results from the 1997-2000 German-wide survey have been supplemented by additional field trials. These field trials focussed on the quantitative and qualitative effects of seed treatment on the root system and the relationship between take-all root infestation and yield.
