Possibilities were evaluated for the development of new production organisms for the production of heterologous enzymes. A newly developed expression plasmid could easily be transferred to 12 different bacterial species and was used for the production of four heterologous glycoside hydrolases in Paenibacillus polymyxa. Signal peptide libraries were screened and the promoter and the culture medium were optimized. Using these approaches, an increase of the Cel8A activity in the supernatant of P. polymyxa from initially 30 U/l to 5,475 ± 411 U/l (about 0.35 g/l) was achieved.
