Kurzfassung:
The unicellular green alga Phacotus lenticularis (P.l.) is the only calcifying species of phytoplankton in freshwater and is abundant in temperate hard-water lakes worldwide. It forms a bivalved calcite shell and thereby contributes a small but notable part to biogenic calcite precipitation and long-term carbon-sequestration in lakes. This work determined the shell mass and described methodologies for
representative sampling for spatiotemporal P.l. cell density assessment and quantitative sediment analysis.
