Main topic of the present thesis is the synthesis and characterization of essential single congeners from the multi-component insecticide toxaphene, one of the worlds highest production volume insecticides since its discovery in 1945. Single congeners were obtained by photochlorination of three different starting compounds and separation from the resulting chlorinated mixtures by combined normal phase column chromatography. Isolated compounds were identified as toxaphene congeners by GC/MS-EI- and NICI and structures were elucidated by 1H-, 13C-NMR-spectroscopy and X-ray structural analysis.
