Ellagitannins/ellagic acid (ETs/EA), plant polyphenols, are of great significance for the human health. Here, the biosynthetic steps leading to the formation of the first known precursor molecule were investigated. In total, eight genes and encoding enzymes from strawberry, a rich source of ETs/EA, were characterized in detail. Furthermore, metabolite and transcriptome analyses of strawberry fruits provided new information about polyphenol biosynthesis regulators. The results establish the foundation for the biotechnological production of bioactive plant metabolites.
