A system based on the concept of the Balanced Scorecard and its four perspectives of enterprise was developed for the structured registration and empirical analysis of success factors for German dairies. The underlying hypothesis was formulated from the results of a metaanalytic study of success factors in various industries. The final statistical analysis of data submitted by participating dairy enterprises provides a model based on five factors that contributed approximately two thirds towards variance in the success of the enterprises included in the sampling.
