This work was submitted as a diploma thesis in summer term 2011 at the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Munich.
The main subject examined in this study is a traditional wooden house on Büyükada, an island close to the city of Istanbul, which – originating from the mid-19th century – impressively reflects the local style of wooden construction which had been typical over many decades in the Bosporus area.
Using this specific building as an example, the methods of building survey and documentation are described and the approaches discussed. Based on the findings, the building history of the house is delineated and placed in the overall historical context of that region, thus providing the basis for a sensitively designed restoration concept. At the same time, the work is able to add another important piece to the puzzle, regarding the threat of destruction the wooden buildings in the metropolitan area of Istanbul are faced with.
