The physical properties of wood and especially its durability are significantly influenced by the moisture content. It is therefore necessary to be able to determine the wood moisture content.
This work gives an overview of the moisture measurement and its methods in wood.
The different application areas and the differences of the accuracy of the methods is emphasized.
Currently, the oven dry method as a direct method and the electrical resistance measurement, the
capacity measurement and the determination of the sorption properties as indirect methods for determining material moisture content are described in current German standards and in the European
catalogue. Further methods such as the microwave method, ground penetrating radar, X-ray computed tomography and nuclear magnetic resonance are considered.
Through a literature search, the various methods for measuring moisture content in wood are compiled and compared regarding their areas of application and accuracy.
