The conserved cell death suppressor protein BAX INHIBITOR-1 (BI-1) is a susceptibility factor in the pathosystem barley (Hordeum vulgare) - barley powdery mildew fungus (Blumeria graminis f.sp. hordei). Here, BI-1-related LIFEGUARD (LFG) proteins were analyzed in plant - powdery mildew interactions and were shown to be conserved regulators of susceptibility to powdery mildew fungi was well. Moreover, investigations of the potential BI-1-linked signaling components CaM and MLO and of putative BI-1-interacting proteins revealed new insights into BI-1-associated processes, namely plant - pathogen interactions and cell death regulation.
