The optimal development of a bovine embryo requires coordinated embryo-maternal interactions prior to implantation. The enormous growth of a trophoblast involves an increased endometrial transport of amino acids and respective derivatives in ideal composition into the uterine lumen. Furthermore, the pregnancy recognition signal interferon-tau favors the endometrial expression of tolerance inducing and proapoptotic genes but without the induction of apoptosis. The activity of the tolerance generating enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase is intensified. In addition, the semi-allogenic conceptus contributes to immunological acceptance by suppressing the expression of major histocompatibility complex class I molecules and by increasing the expression of the tumor necrosis factor ligand superfamily member 6.
