Numerical simulation methods and MDO techniques have been applied to analyse and optimally design an extraction system for ELISE , a new test facility for a large negative ion source. Relationships between physical and technical aspects, such as electromagnetic fields and thermo-mechanical behaviour of the extraction grids, have been taken into account. Several parametric models for magnetic field, electric field, ion beam, electron trajectories, fluid dynamics, thermal and mechanical stress field have been established in an integrated optimal design approach. Results show that a considerable improvement of the operational parameters could be achieved.
