Coarse hard rock aggregates are characterised by the resistance to crushing, which is defined by the Los Angeles-abrasion value LA10/14 and the impact crushing value SZ8/12. The feasibility of a value prediction was reviewed by a large test program, in which samples from nine quarries were involved. The standard values LA10/14 and SZ8/12 were correlated with test values on rock cuttings (from percussive drilling) and on test cylinders. The test program yielded a database for reliable value predictions. A modified Los Angeles-coefficient and the LCPC-breakability worked best using rock cuttings. The ultrasonic velocity and the unconfined compressive strength determined on test cylinders also provided good correlations. The mentioned test methods use specimens in different scales. Thus, the influence of petrographic properties is considered to be highly significant in order to evaluate the test results.
