Based on theoretical models the permeation through structures of alternating inorganic and polymeric layers was studied. A high stationary barrier performance is reached by a very low thickness of the polymeric intermediate layers. In contrast, an extended lag time is the consequence of increasing the layer thicknesses and the ratio between the solubility coefficients of the materials. Furthermore, the interaction between defects and the influence of filled defects and a permeable inorganic matrix were studied.
