The work is concerned with the evaluation of precision farming using the example of site-specific nitrogen fertilization of winter wheat. The methods for evaluating the site-specific nitrogen fertilization include potentiality calculations with the help of various site-specific nitrogen response functions based on site-specific nitrogen rate trials, as well as the statistical evaluation of strip trials. The results show that the economic benefits of site-specific nitrogen fertilization are limited, therefore site-specific nitrogen fertilization is only profitable with a large cropping area and soil heterogeneity. From an ecological point of view the potentiality calculations show that economic optimum site-specific nitrogen fertilization, especially in the low yield zones with high nitrogen leaching potential, can lead to a substantial reduction in the nitrogen balance surplus. Furthermore, model calculations show that economic optimum site-specific nitrogen fertilization can reduce the long-term risk of high nitrogen balance surpluses.
