Based on the pioneering work of Chen et al. on the field of the catalytic polymerization of Michael monomers via Frustrated Lewis Pairs, factors influencing the catalytic activity of this complexes were investigated at the beginning of this work. In the further course, it was discovered, that a polymerization of Michael-type monomers is also entirely possible without the addition of an external initiator. By varying the ligands of the Al(III)-based complexes, the synthesis of highly photoluminescent, end-group-functionalized polymers was achieved. Mechanistic investigations as well as quantum mechanical calculations were used to determine the cause of this strong photoluminescence, which is thus caused by the formation of a conjugated complex at the chain end of the respective polymers.
