Abstract:
The primary goal of ICD therapy is to prolong life in high-risk cardiac patients. At the end-of-life, ICD therapy may interfere with the natural process and the quality of dying. The decision to deactivate the ICD constitutes a dilemma for all involved. Data from a nationwide patient survey on problem awareness, communication and attitudes of patients towards management of ICD therapy at the end-of-life may permit for new practice guidelines and an improved patient-centered ICD therapy.

Die zur Lebensverlängerung indizierte ICD Therapie kann am Ende des Lebens den Sterbeprozess traumatisieren. Die Entscheidung zur ICD Deaktivierung stellt für Ärzte und Patienten ein Dilemma dar.
