- Atherosklerose ist eine chronisch entzündliche Erkrankung der Gefäße. In dieser Arbeit wird gezeigt, dass hämatopoetische Stamm- und Vorläuferzellen in den atherosklerotischen Läsionen regelmäßig zu finden sind und das Potenzial besitzen, sich in myeloide Zellen zu differenzieren. Sie könnten womöglich eine Quelle für rasch verfügbare Entzündungszellen darstellen und somit neben adulten Immunzellen eine zentrale Rolle bei der Aufrechterhaltung der chronischen Entzündungsreaktion spielen.

- Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of blood vessels. In this present work, it is shown that hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells are regularly found in the regions of atherosclerotic lesions and are able to differentiate to myeloid cells. They could function as a source for rapidly available inflammatory cells and, together with adult immune cells, play an essential role in the maintenance of a chronic inflammatory reaction.
