Novel approaches are presented, which allow to characterize as well as to design periodic waveguide structures efficiently. The analysis approaches include methods, which are based on network theory, full-wave simulations and measurement techniques. Using these methods, the complexity of the analysis is reduced significantly and, thus, an analytical treatment of complex distributed unit cell networks becomes possible. Moreover, the eigenvalues of open periodic structures can be determined within electromagnetic full-wave simulations.
