The operation of internal combustion engines in hybrid drives is subject to completely different boundary conditions, compared to the operation in conventional drive trains. As a result, new options exist for the configuration and the operation mode of internal combustion engines. In practice these are rarely used. For this reason, the present work studies the interaction between the internal combustion engines and the auxiliary drive and educes potentials from it for the design and the operation mode of internal combustion engines in hybrid drives. Based on these findings, the development and design of an internal combustion engine, which is especially designed for a hybrid drive, is demonstrated.
