Alkali compounds released during coal gasification can cause damage in an IGCC process due to deposit formation and high-temperature corrosion. Therefore, a cooling line was developed to investigate the relevant condensation and deposition behaviour of alkali metals up to 1300 °C and 50 bar. At high gas phase cooling gradients, the condensation of the alkali compounds is kinetically inhibited. This inhibition effects a shift of the experimentally obtained deposition zones towards cooler parts of the plant. The displacement is evaluated and reduced deposition rates are implemented in models to describe the temperature reduction of the alkali condensation compared to the thermochemical equilibrium state.
