In the context of mobile communication systems, this thesis presents realistic transmit and receive processing for multi-user communication systems using multiple transmit and receive antennas. The investigations are based on the UMTS-HSDPA system, which provides a practical model for evaluation of the developed signal processing techniques. The investigations start from the link level, where suitable signal processing techniques are developed. One important contribution is the design of a link level to system level interface, which facilitates time efficient system level simulations. At the system level, beamforming strategies are developed in connection with scheduling. Extensive simulations are performed to determine system performance for different channel scenarios, numbers of active users and antenna configurations.
