Pituitary tumours are difficult to treat despite their histological benign nature because of a high risk of recurrence. The pathogenesis of both tumours still remains uncertain in most subjects.
The present study shows the immunostaining of IGFBP-1-6 as part of GH-IGF-signalling system in 99 pituitary adenomas and 14 craniopharyngiomas. In addition histologic prolactin expression, hormonal serum levels, clinical pathology and rate of recurrence were considered.
Both tumours showed a diffuse, but specific staining pattern for all examined IGFBP.
The characteristic immunoreaction for IGFBP-3 with a paranuclear dot-like pattern and the accentuated localization of immunoreactivity for IGFBP-5 to the plasma membrane represent the most interesting results.
The nuclear staining of some IGFBPs - maybe associated with a mitogenic potential - could be important for tumour proliferation and rate of recurrence.
A significant prognostic marker for recurrence could not be proven with the examined parameters.
