In this study, IgE-reactivity to recombinant allergens and cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants (CCD) of 269 patients allergic to bee and/or wasp venom was analyzed. A high sensitivity and CCD-independent specificity of component-resolved diagnosis with recombinant allergens could be confirmed and the so far underestimated role of the major allergen hyaluronidase in cross-reactivity to bee and wasp venom could be pointed out. However, the extent of IgE-reactivity was dependent on the used diagnostic assay: values measured with the Immulite system were found to be higher than with the CAP system.
