Multilayers containing Ni and Ti were investigated in order to prepare neutron supermirrors with high critical angles. As the mechanical and structural properties play a crucial role in determining the quality of the mirrors, special preparation techniques are required. Sputtering of the Ti layers in Ar and the Ni layers in an argon/air mixture was found to be a suitable method for this purpose. It was noticed that the stress in the layers is strongly influenced by the partial pressure of air. However, the embrittlement of the layers is another factor that determines the mechanical stability. Taking this into consideration, crack-free supermirrors with 600 and 1200 layers were prepared exhibiting high reflectivities. C 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
