Ce/Fe and Ce/FeCoV multilayershave been grown by magnetron sputtering on Si substrates with layer thicknessesin the range 10-40 A. The influenceof the sputtering conditions and design of the multilayers on the crystallinity of the layers and on the quality of the interfaceshas been studied by X-ray diffractionand reflection. The interfacesare well definedand the layers are crystallinedown to an individuallayer thicknessof 20 ,\textasciitilde. Ce/FeCoV multilayersshow sharper interfacesthan Ce/Fe ones but someloss of crystallinityis observed.Hysteresisloops obtained by SQUID show different behaviour of the bulk magnetisation as a function of the layer thickness. Fe moments are found by M6ssbauer spectroscopy to be perpendicular to the interfacesfor small periodicity multilayers.
