In this paper the potential emerging from the addition of semantic information to a service oriented software architecture for autonomous manufacturing process control is discussed. Starting with a short motivation for adaptive, flexible and autonomous manufacturing, the concept of semantic manufacturing services as an analogy to semantic web services is introduced. This concept is then explained through an example application of a milling machine. Finally, the possibilities, advantages and limitations of this concept are discussed and summarized.     «
