The functionality of high precision composite parts might be affected by distortions caused by residual curing stresses. In order to compensate these distortions actuator patches consisting of shape memory polymers can be used for a post manufacturing shape adjustment. For the determination of necessary actuation properties an experimental method is developed. Methods for the shape sensing are introduced. Finite element models are used to investigate the structure-actuator interface for these soft actuator materials. An optimization process to determine optimal actuator configurations for the shape error minimization is developed. Obtained simulation results are verified with experiments in which significant shape error reductions are achieved.
