Although an effective prophylactic vaccine is available, chronic hepatitis B remains a global health problem without curative treatment options. This thesis describes the generation and characterization of novel human monoclonal antibodies directed against hepatitis B virus envelope proteins. Among several candidates, two newly generated antibodies obtained high antigen affinity, broad neutralization capacity, and the potential to activate immune effector cells. This provides the basis for the development of novel antibody-based treatment strategies for chronic hepatitis B.
