The neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay experiment GERDA has taken 21.6 kg·yr of data in Phase I. A comprehensive background model is presented. The half life of the two-neutrino double beta decay of Ge-76 has been determined as (1.926 ± 0.094) x 10
21 yr. No indication for a 0νββ signal has been found. A lower limit at 90% C.I. on 0νββ half life of 1.85 x 10
25 yr from GERDA data alone and 2.86 x 10
25 yr from the combination with data of past HPGe experiments has been derived using Bayesian analysis.
